‘The Public’ feels like the kind of political and cultural commentary needed right now, and it’s obvious that Estevez has crafted something he is passionate about, with good intention. However, the script is sadly so entry-level that it struggles to challenge audiences in the face of its desire to have universal appeal and accessibility. When car dealer Charlie Babbitt learns that his estranged father has died, he returns home to Cincinnati, where he discovers that he has a savant older brother named Raymond and that his father's $3 million fortune is being left to the mental institution in which Raymond lives.
