Tannishtha Chatterjee is an Indian actor. She is best known in the west for her performance in the British film Brick Lane (2007), the film adaptation of Monica Ali's best selling novel of the same name. She has been the only Indian to be nominated for the British Independent Film Awards (BAFTA) as the best actress for Brick Lane. Her other notables roles have been in Academy Award-winning German director Florian Gallenberger's film, Shadows of Time, Road, Movie with Abhay Deol and Bibar for which she won Best Actress at the 2006 Osian Film Festival and the 2007 BFJA awards. Her pupils are in the D division - 'D' sarcastically referred to as Duffers by both the students and other teachers. How Santoshi rebels against the system to fight for her students, forms the bulk of the simply told, yet completely thought provoking film. The rebellion of the teacher and her students are internalised to make their point.

Was the only official entry from India for the Oscar awards at Los Angeles in the shorts section-in 2003 -it competed in the honorary foreign film category. The short film “Notes On Her” inspired by Mahashweta devi's 'DRAUPADI AND BASHAI TUDU'. - is about a journalist’s memory of a rebel called Dopdi who never seems to die. It’s an experimental film not following a strict narrative structure and is highly visual with a complimenting sound track which enhances the film’s dark atmosphere. The film was shot in black and white and printed on color to achieve the dark, high contrast, gritty images.
