Reviews

I don't know how accurate it is, but it's hysterical...and Ironic that we can't use the title in our reviews. But, it does have more humor than substance in it, the theories about how the word evolved and what it meant are mostly all stated and explained along with a brief etymology of the word itself and some of the myths around it...but doesn't really come to a solid conclusion. And the inclusion and dedication to Hunter S. Thompson is well received given his love of the word and how beautifully vulgar his writings could be. It was a fitting final interview for him. Ultimately, though, watch it for the humor. I'd take the "documentary" part with a grain of salt. In either case it will entertain.

The Ruler

Stalin’s statue in the garden of a nunnery provokes discussion – plenty of it – in a small Georgian village. Some of the locals used to know Stalin personally because he visited the village several times when he was young, and they continue to see him as a benign ruler from the good old days rather than the brutal dictator he was. Whenever an episode of purge shook the Soviet Union’s republics, they hid the statue in the woods. The church also plays an important role in people’s lives. All in all, the film reveals a fundamental conflict in Georgian society.

In the Grip of Gazprom

The war in the Ukraine has changed the way many European countries view Russian politics. Suddenly it became clear how dependent countries had become on Russian gas imports for decades and what Vladimir Putin was up to. However, no country needs more gas than Germany. It was only after Russia's invasion of the Ukraine that the German government realized that Russia had long used gas as a weapon to impose its will on states. The instrument created for this purpose is the natural gas production company GAZPROM. So how did Germany become so dependent on Russian gas? The documentary shows how, over several decades and several changes of government, a broad alliance of politicians and business representatives did everything possible to secure Germany's energy supply with cheap Russian gas, while the Kremlin's foreign policy became increasingly aggressive and the warnings of experts went unheeded.
