Oh, business woes. Plot in a nutshell: Character study of a WWII veteran trying to make it in the business world of post-war America, and contend with his domestic problems. Comments: Great cast of veteran actors really makes this work. Gregory Peck is a very mature actor by this point, and Jennifer Jones is very convincing as the wise but harried housewife. Fredric March plays a nice corporate boss, and comes across as a bit odd; maybe that's just Fredric March. This film isn't just any old "escapist fare" - actually about as far from that as you can get. It's very long, dark, and intelligent. "Without men like me there wouldn't be big and successful businesses. My mistake was in being one of those men." ~Ralph Hopkins (Fredric March)
Two rival homeless men scour the streets of Long Beach in search of their livelihood and survival-recyclables, until a mysterious trashcan is discovered and disrupts the balance of power.

Mehmet, who works as a detective, follows Harun, a society playboy who is having an affair with the wife of a businessman in his last job. Cheated on, the businessman decides to kill Harun. Mehmet's daughter Zeynep goes and warns Harun to prevent this murder, and an unexpected series of events unfolds.
In the Kerepesi Street cemetery, three grave diggers contemplate the fate of the world, then they step out of this role and in a sequence of episodes they play the typical figures of contemporary Hungarian reality, the fat cat, the swashbuckler, the victim, underworld chieftains, and present little absurd dramas of love, marriage, friendship, public order and legal safety. The author and the film director walk among them all the time, contemplating, laughing at their plays. The stories starting from the graveyard and returning there warn of the inevitability of death. The author and the director (Gyula Hernádi and Miklós Jancsó) wisely make friends with death.
