Two shady businessmen set out to shake up the West Berlin funeral industry - with unconventional ideas and questionable methods. To this end, they take over the business of a long-established mortician who wants to retire. One of them also hooks up with the colorless daughter of the chairman of the local mortician's association in order to get money and his father's customer list from her. Meanwhile, his partner has to deal with his wife and their equally nagging children. And then the establishment strikes back. At the same time, the unmarried newcomer to the industry discovers that he does have real feelings for the association chairman's daughter.

Flaming Hearts

When Peter Huber the proprietor of a Bavarian corner newsstand, wins a free trip to New York City in a magazine contest, he is overjoyed. Filled with romantic ideas from the movies, his actual encounter with the gritty realities of the Big Apple are sobering. Nonetheless, he is in for the adventure of his life. First, he meets Karola Faber, the German wife of a U.S. G.I. who has found life in the States not all it's cracked up to be: she has left her husband and makes her living through prostitution. Peter and Karola visit the local German emigré community's Oktoberfest, and win the festival's King and Queen crown. Their prize is a cow, which accompanies them on their further journeys in New York City.

When the actress Gloria Mundi, who had celebrated success as a teenager with revealing scenes, but who had killed her mother and her lover in Hollywood in 1961, returns to Berlin, Holger's penchant for the washed-up star becomes obsessive.

Berlinger

A fictional, non-chronological account of the life of the scientist, adventurer and industrialist Lukas Berlinger. The key dates and central events include Berlinger's birth in 1914, his friendship with Johannes Roeder, who was the same age, his marriage to Marlit in the early 1930s and Roeder's joining the NSDAP in 1936. As a chemist and "scientist important to the war effort", Berlinger was not required to go to the front during the Second World War, but it was slowly discovered that he was helping persecuted people to escape to Switzerland. Pressure from the Gestapo cost Marlit her life, and Berlinger fled to South America. It was not until 1968 that he returned to the western part of Germany. He meets Roeder again, who is now a senator and has become rich as a "building tycoon", and meets Maria, a teacher almost 30 years his junior, who looks strikingly similar to Marlit.
