After the Germans invaded the Netherlands, she fell in love with the German Bernd Verspohl at a dance. From then on she was called Moffengriet, the derogatory name for women in the Netherlands who got involved with German soldiers. Young happiness is overshadowed by the tragic events of the time.

Suddenly, the doctor appears in Blaha's apartment on the third floor, claiming that he has also been called up for an "exercise". Blaha's confusion grows. He gradually learns that his apartment is to be "conquered" by the wine merchant Müller, who thinks Blaha wants to murder him. The absurdity reaches its climax when Müller turns up heavily armed in Blaha's apartment - an attack that Blaha doesn't understand until his last breath...
