An Hubley family enterprise that begins with their children's imaginary performance of a fairy tale about "Princess Polly" and "Prince John" - except that the two girls are way too easily distracted by things in their garden and the realisation - in the real world - that you can't actually marry your sister! Meantime, the animation strives to keep up with their characterisations featuring castles, chivalric knights, damsels in distress and, of course, a great big dragon! Soon tiring of that story, we now find ourselves with a bright giraffe and a kangaroo bouncing all over the place. The narrative comes across as a charming and entirely spontaneous conversation between the two youngsters at play and the stylish and colourful drawings cleverly parallel that meandering chatter, as does the clever use of sound effects leaving us with an end product that is quite an unique and stylish animation full of vibrancy and movement. Not a great deal of wind, though!!
In this terribly poignant tale of memory, loss and love, Juliette, a young woman paying a visit to her Alzheimer's suffering father, unexpectedly triggers a brief but touching moment of lucidity between them. A moment she hopes she will never forget, but knows in her heart he has already forgotten.
Walking towards the fire. In a ceaseless stream of light, people, landscapes and objects lead us to mysterious regions. French filmmaker Patrick Bokanowski’s work is hard to classify - and all the richer for it. Together with his wife Michèle, whose musique concrète compositions form the basis of the sound design, Bokanowski offers a prolonged, dense and visually visceral experience of the kind that is rare in cinema today. Difficult to define and locate, its strangeness is quite unique.
Film directed from the play "Orpheon", directed by François Tanguy, played by the Compagny of Raft.
Kangourou is short pornographic film which I categorize as fleshfilm or fleshflick. Kangourou jumps from fantasy to reality as it follows the two protagonist Ryan Patrix and myself on an erotic train ride. I catch a glimpse of Ryan on the platform while he waits for his train. Once I board the train it’s a little unclear if the stranger, Patrix, is also onboard in the physical or if I invent our interaction. Patrix was not only a joy to work with but he is super sexy and smart, which gave me instant scene boners.
"The Role of Chance" ("La part du hasard") focuses exclusively on drawing and painting techniques used by the painter Henri Dimier. Shot over several weeks in the same artist's studio, the film shows works in their different phases, processes rarely explained or little known. It also addresses many practical issues (choice of paper, pigment grinding, reports drawings, put the tiles, cliches, etc) as well as broader questions of method and inspiration (use of space, the role of contours, power of suggestion perspectives, use of random processes). Patrick Bokanowski sought with this film to restore the spirit of this teaching, showing how to bend a note or sometimes revealing an essential mystery of creation.
Indonesia, 1965: hundreds and even thousands of people are arrested without warrant. Some did come back, the others lost without trace. Svet, one of the survivors of the Indonesian dark history recounts the memory she had of her father, whom she believes to be responsible for the 1965 tragedy.
Margit and her older sister Katla flee for safety after their mother is burned to death for witchcraft. Finding shelter with Johan and his resentful young son, Jonas, the sisters help form an impromptu family unit that’s soon strained by Katla’s burgeoning sorcery.
In her recent films, Geiser has been exploring the possibilities found in merging video texture with film, creating a kind of deep, ambiguous space, a suggestion of “the floating world”. In ULTIMA THULE, gravity fails, land and sky lose their historical meaning. A small silver plane navigates an ultramarine storm, flying over barely-glimpsed hills, an unlikely ferry to ”Ultima Thule”: the farthest point north, the limit of any journey. The seduction of immersion in blue is too strong to avoid, the land fills with water, and time loses its line.
