I think this might have done better had Monty Tully searched a bit harder for a more charismatic leading man. As it is, we are saddled with the rather unremarkable Terence Landon in the lead role. He is a member of a group who ambush a bus carrying one of their leader "Bart" (Tom Bowman), and proceed to lock the remaining passengers and the prison officers in a barn that they claim is soaked with paraffin. They will escape, leaving their captives inside and woe betides if they try to escape. Meantime, the police find the corpse of someone who ought to already be in jail and after a quick investigation realise that the bus didn't make to to it's destination. Now they have to trace it before a conflagration consumes everyone - it's Guy Fawkes' night! The plot tries to juggle the police activities with the increasingly melodramatic behaviour inside the barn (prisoners who have been harshly treated, hard done by, etc.), and in the muddle we end up with quite a lot of dialogue and not a lot of jeopardy as the story really does follow well trammelled lines. To be fair, the supporting cast of reliable British faces add some quirkiness and character to the thing, and Jennifer Jayne ("Nita") does all that is required of her (not very much) but this is still just a routine afternoon B-filler that passes seventy-five minutes but is a film that you will never remember.
Centring on the activities of a gang of assorted criminals and, in particular, their leader – a vicious young hoodlum known as "Pinkie" – the film's main thematic concern is the criminal underbelly evident in inter-war Brighton.
Anne Maitland, a female lawyer, receives an unexpected late-night visit from ex-boyfriend Guy Ransome. She agrees to let him sleep on the sofa but he must leave the next morning. When he returns home he finds that his girlfriend has been murdered. His former lover agrees to defend him without telling the court that he spent the night with her. Complications ensue.
A young boy is blackmailed by a crook who saw him unwittingly cause his friend's death.
Filmed in England but set in New York, No Orchids For Miss Blandish tells of a sheltered heiress who is abducted on her wedding night by a trio of cheap hoods, in what starts out as a jewel robbery and turns into a kidnapping/murder when one of them kills the bridegroom. More mayhem ensues as the three kidnappers soon end up dead.
Locked in her cell, a murderer reflects on the events that have led her to death row.
Bill Saunders, a former prisoner of war living in England, whose experiences have left him unstable and violent, gets into a bar fight in which he in kills a man and then flees. He hides out with the assistance of a nurse, Jane Wharton, who believes his story that the killing was an accident.
Les Dalton is on parole after nine years in prison for armed robbery, and now everyone wants to know what happened to the missing gold. He claims it never existed, but no-one believes him, including the retired detective who headed the original manhunt. Whilst Dalton tries to build a new life in a world he wants no part of it, plans are afoot to force him to tell the truth - a move which will ultimately cost someone their life.
Detective Inspector Campbell (Gordon Jackson) looks into the murder of a teacher at a girls school where there are a number of suspects, including her colleagues and the married man she had been seeing.
A man falls in love with a beautiful young woman and begins to suspect that he may have also loved her in a previous life.
“Shorty” Matthews having recently been released from prison visits his girlfriend in London only to discover her murdered. Fearing he will be wrongly accused of being the culprit he disappears amongst the long-distance lorry driving community. Meanwhile, the real killer, unassuming ex-schoolteacher Walter Hoover, continues to prey on London women. As Shorty had feared he has become the main suspect. He returns to London with old flame Molly to prove his innocence.
