In 1921, we follow two women - Marie and Grete - from the same poor Viennese neighborhood, as they try to better the lives of themselves and their families during the period of Austrian postwar hyperinflation.

Lulu is a young woman so beautiful and alluring that few can resist her siren charms. The men drawn into her web include respectable newspaper publisher Dr. Ludwig Schön, his musical producer son Alwa, circus performer Rodrigo Quast, and seedy old Schigolch. When Lulu's charms inevitably lead to tragedy, the downward spiral encompasses them all.

In this realistic, unsentimental portrait of Germany’s dire economic situation, a middle-aged payroll clerk loses his job due to technological advances and, unable to find another, descends into despair. The film’s director, Marie Harder, was one of only a few women directors of the time and was also the head of the German Social Democratic Film Office. She made only two known films before her accidental death in exile in Mexico in 1936.

It was not just the children who were treated badly by the wealthy Weimar republic. Robert Kramer is released from prison but struggles to adjust to civilian life. His father disowns him, his wife has left him for another man. There is no work. He eventually arrives in a shelter for the homeless, and seeks salvation through Emma, a prostitute.

Ajit Singh returns from abroad. His mother receives him with affection. Ajit comes across a model photographer, Ravikant, and asks him to decorate his bedroom with photographs of sexy girls. Eventually, he offers to marry her but she is already engaged to Ravikant and therefore, refuses. A sly Ajit offers his place up for their marriage. During the ceremony, Ajit finds a way to molest Roma. His mother sees it and intervenes, eventually ending up shooting him. Ajit haunts the couple even after his death. His desires for Roma do not change and he claims her to be his wife and haunts her. His mother and Ravikant visit saints and seek tantric aid to pacify the wicked soul of Ajit.
