The fairy tale of childhood is that our lives will follow an ideal trajectory. Destiny decides otherwise for Wing-Kai who becomes bedridden, paralysed from the neck down after a car accident. The monotonous hospital life depresses the young man. Years later, he meets a young girl who is caring for her boyfriend in vegetative state, believing that her love will wake him up eventually. Wing-Kai ridicules her innocent optimism. When the young man recovers miraculously, hope reawakens in Wing-Kai who begins rehabilitation training with great fervour. One sunny day during the summer holidays, two brothers have an extraordinary mission to fulfil. Lai-sing, full of aspirations as a journalist, lives in Hong Kong with his sister Kei-mei. Their parents live in Hainan since retirement while Uncle Guoyou lives in Shenzhen. The family is separated until the third anniversary of the death of Lai-sing's grandmother. According to tradition, a monument has to be erected on this occasion, which brings the family members to meet up. The reunion slowly unveils the indiscernible distances and intimacies built over time. It is only through understanding and acceptance that they would cast aside their differences and show genuine care for each other.

Divorced café owner Kayan lives with her daughter Tung. Her life is renewed after meeting her lesbian partner Shuting who becomes part of the loving family. When Kayan dies in a tragic car accident, the grieving Shuting wants to continue taking care of Tung but encounters strong opposition from Kayan’s mother. At Kayan’s funeral, due to social norms and taboos, Shuting is completely side-lined and stripped of the privilege to bid farewell to the love of her life. She faces yet another dilemma, having to make the decision to do what is best for Tung.
