Ray Mears

Over the past two decades the name Ray Mears has become recognised throughout the world as an authority on the subject of Bushcraft and Survival. He has also become a household name through his various television series, including Tracks, World of Survival, Trips Money Can't Buy with Ewan McGregor, The Real Heroes of Telemark and many more. These programmes have reached out and touched the hearts of everyone, from small children to grandparents. They are enjoyed by many because of Ray's down to earth approach, his obvious love for his subject and the empathy and respect he shows for indigenous peoples and their cultures. It is obvious to some, and a surprise to others to discover that Ray has spent his life learning these skills and is truly a master of the subject he calls Wilderness Bushcraft. Born : 7th-Feb-1964

Ray swims in turquoise waters with whale sharks in out on the Ningaloo reef, and discovers fossils of their giant prehistoric ancestors in Ningaloo's limestone cliffs which rose out of the seabed 20 million years ago. Ray also traverses through large mangroves and the waterways of Kakadu, where he encounters salt water crocodiles, and stays with an aboriginal family who share with him the history of farming with fire and finding ingredients to make a meal out of the bush, as well as climbing into mountain ranges and exploring deep into the ancient Walpole forest, on the trail for the quokka, one of Australia's most timid marsupials.

The series was broadcast by ITV, and was billed as the return of the Survival brand. It was followed by Wild Britain with Ray Mears. Survival consists of three, hour-long, programmes, focusing on Mears' tracking of the world's top predators. He follows the leopard in Namibia, the bear in British Columbia, and the wolf in Central Idaho. An underpinning theme is the threats faced by each species: in Idaho the crew arrives with only days to countdown before the wolf’s status as a protected species is lifted, and local farmers indicate their intention to begin hunting them; in British Columbia the impact of global warming on the salmon population is felt by the bear; and in Namibia the uneasy co-existence between leopards and local farmers is highlighted.
