1999 FIA Formula One World Championship Season Review

The 1999 Formula One season was the 50th FIA Formula One World Championship season. It commenced on March 7, 1999, and ended on October 31 after sixteen races. The season saw the introduction of a new event to the World Championship calendar, the Malaysian Grand Prix. The drivers World Championship was won by Mika Häkkinen, although Eddie Irvine, David Coulthard and Heinz-Harald Frentzen all had a chance of clinching it. Ferrari won the constructors World Championship, which paved the way for the Michael Schumacher-era of Ferrari dominance at the start of the 21st century. Schumacher was injured during the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, suffering a broken leg in a crash, but returned before the end of the season.

Williams BMW employed the youngest ever British driver, twenty-year-old Jenson Button, big cats Jaguar opened their first F1 season, hoping to follow on from previous success in sports car racing and the US hosted its first F1 race for nine years, attracting the biggest spectator crowd the sport has witnessed in recent times. The season saw a wave of emerging talent such as Pedro de la Rosa (Arrows), and notably Jarno Trulli (Jordan), who ran strong at the Nurburgring and Monaco respectively. Mika - Tooned is an animated cartoon by McLaren starring Jenson Button, Sergio Pérez and comedian Alexander Armstrong. It aired on Sky Sports F1 before the start of each Formula 1 race. The first season, which starred former McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton aired from the 2012 British Grand Prix onwards. The second season aired from the 2013 British Grand Prix onwards. All episodes can be watched on McLaren's YouTube channel and the Sky Sports F1 website any time after the premiere. The episodes are a little more than 3 minutes long. On 16 May 2014 it was announced on McLaren's YouTube Channel that a season 3 was in progress. It was announced when Jenson Button was shown a picture of his 2014 team mate Kevin Magnussen's character on Tooned and also added that 'the production of Season 3 was going well'. In 2016 a 'one-off special',again starring Alexander Armstrong and Jenson Button,to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of James Hunt winning the Driver's World Championship,was produced,introducing current Driver Fernando Alonso to the world of Tooned!
