It came out in '93 when I was 13 and seriously got addicted to the moody mystery thrillers. I mean, I grew up in a house that fostered a love for pulp fiction novels, Sabitini, Leonard, Howard, Hammett, and these movies kind of fall right into those novels. And this had a great cast, Elwes, Silverstone, Rubin, so the film was cast in a way that it could save whatever trash the script was lacking in. And in this case it's plot turns and mystery that it's lacking. The story itself is honestly pretty boring. And I don't fault anyone that objects to that. However, it has enough tension to really enjoy it. The acting is great. It really sets the mood in the right places. It's only when it comes down to the script itself where it fails, and even then the premise is interesting if it were done better.
Nakamura Yukinojo gains popularity in Edo's kabuki scene as a handsome onnagata (a male actor who plays female roles). But hidden behind the placid expression of his stage face is a deep grudge for the men responsible for dishonoring his parents' names and leading them to suicide when he was still a child. When he discovers that the mastermind behind those crimes has come to see him act onstage, he begins in earnest to plot his revenge. With the help of a renowned Robin Hood-like thief named Yamitaro, he makes out his first target: the daughter of the man who orchestrated his parents' demise.
At the height of the Vietnam war, Captain Benjamin Willard is sent on a dangerous mission that, officially, "does not exist, nor will it ever exist." Leonard Shelby is tracking down the man who raped and murdered his wife. The difficulty of locating his wife's killer, however, is compounded by the fact that he suffers from a rare, untreatable form of short-term memory loss. Although he can recall details of life before his accident, Leonard cannot remember what happened fifteen minutes ago, where he's going, or why.
Nine years later, Jesse travels across Europe giving readings from a book he wrote about the night he spent in Vienna with Celine.
