A naive young college student, who is majoring in chemistry, is persuaded by her roommates and a would-be drug dealer to make LSD for them, and she winds up getting caught up in the "acid" lifestyle.

A group of hippie students in Austin, Texas move into an old big house in the woods. However, something else is there and it's influencing them.

They, along with Grandma (Ruth McDevitt) trick out an old Greyhound bus and hit the road. The picaresque plotline brings the family into contact with a variety of colorful characters. The producers of In Search of America never declared outright that the made-for-TV film was intended as a series pilot, but it ends on an ambiguous note with plenty of loose plot ends. Then he breaks it off with Samantha because, beyond the his feelings for her, she is starting to feel like a burden to his protesting activities.

The series swansong, Beat '71, sees Kaji framed and sent to prison by her boyfriend's father and with the help of some hippies she strives to be re-united.

The film was poorly received by the critics, but it nonetheless became one of the highest-grossing theater films in Norway in 1969
