Although at times it's quite eerily claustrophobic, this isn't the best story for the Time Lord. It actually starts as if bits of it are missing. We find the four already trapped in the TARDIS with everyone behaving erratically. It's almost like they've never met - there's certainly not much trust to be seen. Their time machine won't work and the "Doctor" (William Hartnell) has been hit on the head. "Barbara" (Jacqueline Hill), "Susan" (Carole Ann Ford) and "Ian" (William Chesteron) must try to stop squabbling, violently at times, long enough to piece together the mystery. Could it actually be that it's the TARDIS itself that is causing the problem? If so - is that a good thing or a bad one? The entire series is filmed within the confines of a small set and that shows the limitations of the camerawork. At times it provides for intense close ups that can be quite effective, but for most of the rest of the time it tries to squeeze too many people into the shot and there are repositioning camera/cast shadows all over the place. It's got a little tension, but not enough jeopardy.
The TARDIS crew lands in the Himalayas of Cathay in 1289, their ship badly damaged, and are picked up by Marco Polo's caravan on its way along the fabled Silk Road to see the Emperor Kublai Khan. The story concerns the Doctor and his companions' attempts to thwart the machinations of Tegana, who attempts to sabotage the caravan along its travels through the Pamir Plateau and across the treacherous Gobi Desert, and ultimately to assassinate Kublai Khan in Peking, at the height of his imperial power.

Joining the Doctor and K9 is the smart and sassy Romana, a Time Lord fresh from the Academy. Landing on the wintry planet of Ribos to locate the first segment, the TARDIS crew quickly find themselves embroiled in a little local trouble with a pair of conmen and an unstable warlord...

He meets Manami (Aya Ueto) again, who is now a reporter for a magazine which covers bathroom. With the help of the flat face Japanese tribe, Lucius again designs a new thermae. Meanwhile, Emperor Hadrian (Masachika Ichimura) wants to keep the peace with the thermae, but the Senate wants to extend the land by using force. Emperor Hadrian and the Senate now have a confrontation and Rome becomes divided.
