I'm not sure I've ever seen a film like this before. An agrarian community in the Ukraine are facing impending invasion from the Nazis so must rally their resources; flee to the hills or stay behind as potential saboteurs. It was made in the middle of WWII and features quite a formidable cast of stars - Anne Baxter, Dana Andrews, Walter's Huston and Brennan (the latter always seems to end up driving a wagon, whichever film he is in!), Dean Jagger, Farley Granger and an excellent Erich von Stroheim all advancing the cause of the freedom from a Soviet perspective; something completely unimaginable from an Hollywood studio just five years later. It is a pretty shameless piece of propaganda. The young, innocent youth under the jackboot of their tyrannical oppressors, using what limited resources they have to try to thwart the overwhelmingly powerful war machine rolling, relentlessly, through their country - bravely sacrificing life and limb along the way. The dialogue is suitably jingoistic, and there are plenty of rousing, anthemic, songs to keep the comrades motivated. As a wartime depiction, it has an earthiness to it, though - there are some scenes that genuinely and plausibly appal and the youth of Baxter (only 20) and Granger (18) plays well to Lewis Milstone's overall intention. Sometimes when you see films like this you wonder how the brutal Nazis ever lost...
Members of the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division are fighting for their country amidst the rugged terrain of Bastogne, Belgium, in December 1944. Holley and his American compatriots have already seen one of their own, Roderigues, perish under enemy fire. The men try to rebuff another series of Nazi attacks, but what they really need is a change in the weather. Without clear skies, they'll never get the air support they need.
A mismatched team of British Special Services agents led by an American must infiltrate, in disguise, a female-run Enigma factory in Berlin and bring back the decoding device that will end the war.
During World War II, a shot-down American pilot and a marooned Japanese navy captain find themselves stranded on the same small uninhabited island in the Pacific Ocean.
Paris, France, 1482. Frollo, Chief Justice of benevolent King Louis XI, gets infatuated by the beauty of Esmeralda, a young Romani girl. The hunchback Quasimodo, Frollo's protege and bell-ringer of Notre Dame, lives in peace among the bells in the heights of the immense cathedral until he is involved by the twisted magistrate in his malicious plans to free himself from Esmeralda's alleged spell, which he believes to be the devil's work.
Based on a true operation by Israeli commandos. An Air France flight is hijacked by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. The airplane landed in Uganda. The terrorists released some passengers, keeping 94 Jews and 12 air crew hostage. The Israeli government would not negotiate. A rescue plan was devised, and less than 100 commandos were flown across Africa to rescue the passengers in surprisingly successful operation.
During the Second World War, a special project is begun by the US Army Air Corps to integrate African American pilots into the Fighter Pilot Program. Known as the "Tuskegee Airman" for the name of the airbase at which they were trained, these men were forced to constantly endure harassement, prejudice, and much behind the scenes politics until at last they were able to prove themselves in combat.
Two parents put their child in his crib for the night and leave the room. The child starts crying, and the Cat comes into the room to keep him company. The child grabs her tail, and the Cat angrily reminds him that they agreed a thousand years ago that he would not do that. Upon seeing that the child doesn't remember, the Cat sighs and decides to tell him the story from the beginning. The story starts when the planet was young and life on Earth is starting with dinosaurs.
A WWII film set on a Pacific island. Japanese and allied forces occupy different parts of the island. When a group of British soldiers are sent on a mission behind enemy lines, things don't go exactly to plan. This film differs in that some of the 'heroes' are very reluctant, but they come good when they are pursued by the Japanese who are determined to prevent them returning to base.
