Three couples at different parts of life navigate big turning points in their lives over the holidays.

Olya, a straight-A middle school student, is experiencing her parents' break-up and her first love at the same time, all while struggling to maintain the image of a perfect child. One day she stays at her mom's house for a sleepover; the next day, she goes to her dad's. Neither parent is happy about the arrangement, nor is Olya. This is a coming-of-age story set in a small, bleak Russian town.

When a black and white TV is sent from Dubai to a family in a remote village in Calicut, it becomes the darling of its residents. While the idiot box keeps the people busy, a love story sprouts between two young hearts of the suburb.

In Sara's class, the popular kids, also known as the kings and queens, are subjected to daily humiliations, which include having their pants pulled down or water thrown on them, but this is only a sign of their elevated status. Sara is the only blond and blue-eyed girl in her class, and she is completely overlooked by the kings and queens who do not have blond hair and blue eyes. She has a secret crush on one of the kings, who is way out of her league, and she doesn't have any friends either, but would like to become friends with Karen, also an outsider who aspires to a better status. One day, Sara eyes an opportunity to boost her popularity by humiliating herself and thereby become queen. Karen instantly becomes her friend, she seems to catch the eye of her kingly crush and popularity appears within her reach. However, her happiness is short-lived, and in the end she learns a far more valuable lesson than how to be queen for a day.

Valeria is 17 and pregnant. She lives in Puerto Vallarta with Clara, her half sister. Valeria has not wanted her long-absent mother, April, to find out about her pregnancy, but due to the economic strain and the overwhelming responsibility of having a baby in the house, Clara decides to call their mother. April arrives, willing to her daughters, but we soon understand why Valeria had wanted her to stay away.

Follows a Serbian refugees mother and daughter, as they struggle to navigate the many obstacles facing newcomers to Canada.

Wasteland is a five-part anthology film that deals with isolation, mental illness, and the subjectivity of reality. Each of the five parts can be watched individually, but when viewed in sequence, each story brings out a more interesting and distinct context to its respective pieces.
