***Quirky crime/dramedy with loads of black humor tries a little too hard*** The owner of a small travel agency in Alaska (Robin Williams) loves his wife with Tourette Syndrome (Holly Hunter), but he’s financially strapped and needs funds fast. After stumbling upon a frozen corpse he hatches a harebrained scheme that draws the suspicion of an obsessed insurance claims investigator (Giovanni Ribisi). Alison Lohman plays the latter’s live-in girlfriend while Woody Harrelson plays the protagonist’s wild brother. Tim Blake Nelson and W. Earl Brown are also on hand as goofy wannabe hitmen. “The Big White” (2005) is similar to “Fargo” (1996), but more eccentric and comedic. Imagine “A Simple Plan” (1998) or the later “Sugar Mountain” (2016) if they were oddball black comedies and you’d have a good idea. The cast is notable and it’s entertaining enough for what it is while attempting to balance the unsavory with the honorable, but it tries a bit too hard to be offbeat (which I suppose is better than not trying enough). Meanwhile the locations & cinematography are great, Lohman is stunning in a cute way and the score is exceptional. The movie runs 1 hour, 40 minutes, and was shot in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Whitehorse, Yukon. The bulk of the outdoor sequences and cinematography were shot at summit of the White Pass along the border of Alaska and British Columbia, not far from Skagway. GRADE: B-/C+

In a sleepy bedroom community of LA's San Fernando Valley, the murder of a professional athlete by two hit men sets into motion a chain of events that puts the mundane lives of a dozen residents on a collision course. This clever tale tells the story of two hit men, a mistress, a nurse, a vindictive ex-wife, a wealthy art dealer and his lovelorn assistant, a suicidal writer and his dog, and a bitter cop and his partner.

Steven Russell leads a seemingly average life – an organ player in the local church, happily married to Debbie, and a member of the local police force. That is until he has a severe car accident that leads him to the ultimate epiphany: he’s gay and he’s going to live life to the fullest – even if he has to break the law to do it. Taking on an extravagant lifestyle, Steven turns to cons and fraud to make ends meet and is eventually sent to the State Penitentiary where he meets the love of his life, a sensitive, soft-spoken man named Phillip Morris. His devotion to freeing Phillip from jail and building the perfect life together prompts him to attempt (and often succeed at) one impossible con after another.
Detectives Marcus Burnett and Mike Lowrey of the Miami Narcotics Task Force are tasked with stopping the flow of the drug Ecstasy into Miami. They track the drugs to the whacked-out Cuban drug lord Johnny Tapia, who is also involved in a bloody war with Russian and Haitian mobsters. If that isn't bad enough, there's tension between the two detectives when Marcus discovers that playboy Mike is secretly romancing Marcus’ sister, Syd.

In spring 1976, a 19-year-old beauty, her German-born mother, and her crippled father move to the town of a firefighter nicknamed Pin-Pon. Everyone notices the provocative Eliane. She singles out Pin-Pon and soon is crying on his shoulder (she's myopic and hates her reputation as a dunce and as easy); she moves in with him, knits baby clothes, and plans their wedding. Is this love or some kind of plot? She asks Pin-Pon's mother and aunt about the piano in the barn: who delivered it on a November night in 1955? Why does she want to know, and what does it have to do with her mother's sorrows, her father's injury, this quick marriage, and the last name on her birth certificate?
