In August 2021, Daryl Somers put out a call for ideas for segments to be filmed for a 50th anniversary special that would air in the future, with some segments already having being shot with key cast members. It was later confirmed that the Seven Network would air the special, titled Hey Hey It's 50 Years, after Channel Nine revealed that it rejected Somers' pitch for the celebration.
