Heist

Heist is a three-part Irish crime documentary series broadcast on RTÉ One. It examined three memorable and notorious large-scale crimes committed in the country and was broadcast on a sequence of Tuesday evenings in July 2008 at 21:35. The series is produced by RTÉ Archive Unit. The first programme focused on the Real IRA's attempted robbery of a Securicor vehicle in County Wicklow. The second programme examined the 1995 Brinks Allied Heist in which an armed gang robbed £2.8 million from a Dublin depot in Ireland's most expensive cash raid. The final programme detailed the history of Russborough House, the Irish estate owned by the now dead Sir Alfred Beit, and from which priceless works have been robbed on four separate occasions since 1974. That year, an IRA gang stole nineteen paintings with an estimated value of £8 million including a Vermeer, a Goya, two Gainsboroughs and three Rubens. Beit and one of his staff members were struck by revolvers and then tied up in their library. Then in May 1986, £30 million worth of paintings were stolen by the prominent Dublin criminal Martin Cahill. Most of these were recovered in the United Kingdom and Belgium following an international police operation.

It is currently in its sixteenth season and is produced by Independent Pictures. Ear to the Ground is presented by Ella McSweeney, Darragh McCullough and Helen Carroll. Previous presenters include Maeve Dineen, who left after the fifteenth season and the long-running Mairead McGuinness, who has since become a Member of the European Parliament for Fine Gael. The show is repeated on RTÉ One after the lunchtime news each Sunday.

The 2 couples that spawned the most controversy in media were the tumultious relationship beween rapper DMX and Tashera Simmons plus actor Doug Hutchinson (The Green Mile) and wife and fame-seeker Courtney Stodden (they stood out alot due to Courtney being 17 turning 18 when the show was filmed while Doug was 52). Some a-list celebs appeared (Too Short, Treach from Naughty By Nature, Jenna Jameson, Scott Stapp from Creed, JoJo from K-Ci and JoJo and Ghostface Killah for instance).

The subject matter was mainly social issues and current affairs stories from around the world. Fourteen Days in May

Fourteen Days in May is a documentary directed by Paul Hamann and originally shown on television by the British Broadcasting Corporation in 1987. The programme recounts the final days before the execution of Edward Earl Johnson, an American prisoner convicted of rape and murder and imprisoned in the Mississippi State Penitentiary. Johnson protested his innocence and claimed that his confession had been made under duress. He was executed in Mississippi's gas chamber on 20 May 1987. The documentary crew, given access to the prison warden, guards and chaplain and to Johnson and his family, filmed the last days of Johnson's life in detail. The documentary argues against the death penalty and maintains that capital punishment is disproportionately applied to African-Americans convicted of crimes against whites. The programme features attorney Clive Stafford Smith, a noted advocate against capital punishment. Fourteen Days in May won a British Film Institute Grierson Award and a top prize at the Festival dei Populi. It has been shown in many countries but has only appeared in an abbreviated form in the United States, on HBO. Hamann disowned this shortened version. It was in direct response to this documentary that the Lifelines organisation was set up, to organise pen pals for death row prisoners.
