Pearl is a seemingly "normal" young woman who lives a reclusive lifestyle. She struggles between her sexual desires and society's "acceptable" behavior. One day she hears a voice claiming to be Jesus talking to her through the radio. Pearl communicates with him in what appears to be waking consciousness, as well as in her dreams, and he slowly takes over her mind, manipulating and tormenting her as she is pulled between sexual desire and sexual guilt.

Akemi works part time to support herself and her lazy husband. One day she meets an old friend and the friend's husband. She becomes aggravated during their conversation when the couple suggest that Akemi's husband's irresponsible behavior is justifiable. The sex master, Kikunosuke, stands up to rescue a troubled woman mentally and physically.

Loosely based on a 1926 short story by Jun'ichirō Tanizaki, the film opens as an artist and a young woman are in a dentist's waiting room. Though he is attracted to the woman, he says nothing to her. They are later in the same examining room. When he is given an anesthetic, he begins to imagine a series of scenes in which the woman undergoes various forms of sexual abuse, including rape and torture. When the artist recovers from the anesthetic, he finds clues showing that he may not have been hallucinating.
