This Old House - Season : 40

Season 40 Episode 1 - The Net-Zero Bungalow | The Jamestown Net-Zero House

The fortieth season begins with Kevin outside The Breakers in Newport, Rhode Island – a magnificent mansion once owned by the Vanderbilt family. Tommy picks him up in the truck and they drive across the bridge to Jamestown to this season’s first project – a 1920s bungalow. A far cry from the Newport mansions, this modest Jamestown home will become a larger net-zero house -- a house capable of making all the energy it needs. They meet the owner, Donald Powers, who is also the architect, and he discusses the challenge of making a completely net-zero house out of an old house with a new addition. Inside, Kevin meets Dana Powers and their two sons, Nate and Theo. Dana takes Kevin on a tour of the house and describes the changes that will be made. In the basement, Richard talks to Kevin about what exists now but also what has to happen to make the house more energy efficient. The two of them visit a completed net-zero home outside of Boston to see that this type of a house can still have an architecturally pleasing style. Back in Rhode Island, home builder Jeff Sweenor is introduced. He gives Kevin a tour of the latest Idea House, which is just underway. At the project house, Jeff and the team meet up with the family and demo begins. Air Date : 6th-Oct-2018  Read More

Season 40 Episode 2 - Net Zero From the Ground Up | The Jamestown Net-Zero House

Kevin arrives at the project and meets builder Jeff Sweenor. Jeff’s concerned about the siding shingles, which appear to be an asbestos cement product overlaid on the original cedar shingles. Special precautions must be taken to remove them. Around the corner, Tommy finds Jeff’s crew starting to dig for the new foundation. Since precast foundation walls will soon be installed and their height is already established, any adjustments needed to make the walls meet the required height on the house can be done down at the stone base. Kevin visits the manufacturer in Pennsylvania that makes the custom insulated wall panels. The project house is located in Jamestown, Rhode Island, which is a unique island in the middle of Narragansett Bay. Homeowner Donald gives Kevin an historic tour of the area. Back at the house, the foundation wall panels arrive and are placed. Adam Campbell supervises a crew that spends only a few house gluing the panels together. Roger meets with Norm, Richard, Tommy and Kevin and they close the show together. Air Date : 13th-Oct-2018  Read More

Season 40 Episode 3 - HVAC of the Future | The Jamestown Net-Zero House

Kevin arrives as framing the new addition is just underway. Kevin helps him build a wall with insulated headers. They also frame the corners differently to allow for more insulation. Richard demonstrates heat loss and gain to design a balanced HVAC system. With a model of the new project house, he shows what sun exposure and ventilation can do to a building. He and Donald take a trip to the International Builders’ Show in Orlando, Florida to see the latest technology. Now that the project house is opened up inside, Jeff points out a plumbing error made long ago.
