Jon Pertwee

John Devon Roland "Jon" Pertwee (7 July 1919 – 20 May 1996) was an English actor, comedian, entertainer and cabaret performer. Born into a theatrical family, he served in the Royal Navy and the Naval Intelligence Division during the Second World War. In his early career he worked as a stage comedian, which included performing at the Glasgow Empire Theatre and sharing a bill with Max Wall and Jimmy James. Born : 7th-Jul-1919

Longleat '83: The Lost Footage

In April 1983, Roger Stevens and James Russell were given “Access All Areas” passes to the BBC’s Doctor Who celebrations at Longleat. Armed with a Ferguson Videostar camera they set out to record as much of the event as they could. While the BBC’s official footage amounts to only a few minutes for news broadcasts, James and Roger recorded several hours, and their material includes interviews with both Patrick Troughton and Tom Baker. Some of this material has been used in other productions by both Reeltime Pictures and BBC Video, but the original tapes were thought to be lost forever – until rediscovered earlier this year. So now enjoy another chance to take a trip to Longleat in 1983. The sound may not be perfect and the pictures come from ageing VHS tapes – but the atmosphere is unmistakable. Host - Whodunnit? is a British television game show, broadcast between 1972 and 1978 for ITV by Thames Television. It was written by Lance Percival and Jeremy Lloyd, and hosted first by Edward Woodward. One of the panelists in the first series was Jon Pertwee, who took over as the show's presenter from season two. Each week it featured a short murder-mystery drama enacted in front of a panel of celebrity guests who then had to interview the remaining characters to establish who the murderer was. Patrick Mower and Anouska Hempel became the permanent panelists from season three onwards, with two guest celebrities each episode. The only clue was that only the murderer could lie. Whodunnit? originally adopted a conventional panel-game studio layout, but from series three onwards utilised the murder scene itself as the set. It was similar in format, although not officially connected to, the popular board game Cluedo. The theme to the show was written by Tony Hatch
