Biography of feuding advice columnist twins, Ann Landers and Abby Van Buren, starts with their early lives in Sioux City, Iowa when they were known as Esther and Pauline through their double wedding and follows them into their columnist successes. However, much of the film also concentrates on their personal and professional feuds that ran the course of their lives. Written by John Sacksteder

The main character of the film is Paunvere tailor Jorh Adniel Kiir. Two young seamstresses, Juuli and Maali, arrive in Paunvere. At first, Kiir regards them as competitors, but then he establishes friendly relations with them. Kiir marries Juuli, but he is not indifferent to Maali either. The film also follows Kiir's efforts to get his own farm.

Two resentful, singer brothers Hakan and Ozan who can't get along well. Meet again in their father's funeral. Even though they want to get back to their daily lives after the funeral, their father's will won't allow it. They will take a journey with their dead father's old car in order to carry out his bequest which is to sing at a wedding in Urla.

Somewhere in the archipelago outside Sandhamn lives the barber Assar Gustafsson and his 17-year old daughter Anna-Bella. Out of the blue his wife comes back after five years of absence. She starts up a brothel in their bath house with Anna-Bella as the main attraction, a brothel that attracts various men from all over. The browbeaten Assar starts to make arrangements for his wife's permanent absence.

Enid only looks like she's sleeping. In fact, she's dead. Shortly after Enid caught her husband Harry in bed with her sister June, a row ensued, whereupon June accidently killed Enid. June's problem now is to hide the truth from the authorities, including her police-officer husband Floyd. Then she decides to reveal Enid's demise, albeit rearranging the damning evidence to make the whole thing look like the accident it really was.

Fredric March essays a dual role in this story of a ne'er-do-well who impersonates his brother when the latter dies.
