I think anyone who only recalls Dame Elizabeth Taylor from her later life ought to watch this and perhaps they will begin to appreciate just how beautiful and talented she was - and this is by no means her best effort on screen. This film belongs fairly and squarely to Montgomery Clift. He is "George Eastman", a cousin from the less wealthy branch of the family who seeks employment from his uncle "Charles" (Herbert Heyes). He is politely received and given a fairly lowly job, but it's a start and he can reassure his mother (Anne Revere) whilst courting "Alice" (Shelley Winters). Enter the young "Angela Vickers" (Taylor) who immediately turns his head. He can think of no-one else, she captivates him - he is spellbound. What to do about poor old "Alice" though? She isn't going to just let him dump her, she is in love and she is now expecting his child. Director George Stevens handles the rest of this film will consummate skill. "George" takes "Alice" for a picnic, a boating trip, an accident - and then a trial at which he is accused of clobbering her over the head with an oar before she drowned. Witnesses gather, gossip is traded and opinions are formed that may well send him to the chair... Clift, in his earlier roles, had the ability to mix allure and vulnerability in away seldom seen at the time, and here he develops his character from shy young man to calculating, if out of his depth, lover really well. Shelley Winters rarely disappointed too and again, here, she is strong as the needy yet loving girlfriend spurned. Franz Waxman scores perfectly and the photography is frequently tight and immersing. Court room dramas can be tricky to keep lively, but as we come to the denouement here, there is always some jeopardy as to the verdict. I got that wrong, by the way... Super film, this - big screen if you can.
The script is based on Borges's story "The Gospel according to St. Mark".
The first part tells the story of Moses leading the Jews from Egypt to the Promised Land, his receipt of the tablets and the worship of the golden calf. The second part shows the efficacy of the commandments in modern life through a story set in San Francisco. Two brothers, rivals for the love of Mary, also come into conflict when John discovers Dan used shoddy materials to construct a cathedral.
Tessa Young is a dedicated student, dutiful daughter and loyal girlfriend to her high school sweetheart. Entering her first semester of college, Tessa's guarded world opens up when she meets Hardin Scott, a mysterious and brooding rebel who makes her question all she thought she knew about herself - and what she wants out of life.
A young black pianist becomes embroiled in the lives of an upper-class white family set among the racial tensions, infidelity, violence, and other nostalgic events in early 1900s New York City.
On a quiet street in Helsinki, Sachie has opened a diner featuring rice balls. For a month she has no customers. Then, in short order, she has her first customer, meets Midori, a gangly Japanese tourist, and invites her to stay with her.
A retelling of L.M. Montgomery's story of Anne Shirley, an orphan who is accidentally sent to a couple looking to adopt a boy instead
This comical love story follows the story of A.J. Fikry, whose life is not at all what he expected it to be. His wife has died, his bookstore is experiencing the worst sales in its history and now his prized possession, a rare edition of Poe poems, has been stolen. He’s given up on people and even the books in his store offer another reminder that the world is changing too rapidly. But when a mysterious package arrives at the store, it gives Fikry the chance to make his life over and see things anew.
A US government germ warfare lab has had an accident. The first theory is that one of the germs has been released and killed several scientists. The big fear is that a more virulent strain, named The Satan Bug because all life can be killed off by it should it escape, may have been stolen.
Tara, now settled in Montana and dating Cowboy Boone, works to bring their family lives together but tensions arise, as blending their families will be more of a challenge than anticipated.
A young master, Vladimir Dubrovsky, comes to the estate to visit his father, who has long been in litigation with his neighbor, the despotic landowner Troekurov. Having seriously insulted Dubrovsky Sr., Troekurov tries to go to peace, but the proud old man is adamant.
When her only relative, her elder brother is accused of robbing and murdering an old woman loan-shark, pretty, young Kiriko travels from her home in Kyushu to Tokyo to get Japan's top lawyer to defend her brother. Unfortunately her naive idealism is shattered when the lawyer refuses to take the case based on her insufficient funds. What follows is a long determined revenge plot that sees the heroine become a Tokyo bar hostess and worse to punish the lawyer. The plot thickens with another murder mystery and a sleuthing reporter.
