William James Moriarty, now known as the "Lord of Crime" to the public, and his allies are still working towards an ideal country by punishing the corrupt nobility. The corpse of a shabbily dressed young woman has been discovered in the mud flats of the Thames at low tide. Police assume she's a prostitute, but Dr. Watson suspects something more and goes to his old friend Holmes, now retired and at very loose ends.

While William James Moriarty receives a letter of request from his old teacher Jack Renfield, the Scotland Yard inspector Lestrade also seeks out Sherlock Holmes and John H. Watson for help in this matter.
