This has all the ingredients of a sure-fire western adventure. Set in the latter part of the 19th century, Randolph Scott is ("Dan Mitchell") the marshall in Abilene who alongside his cohort Edgar Buchanan ("Sheriff Trimble") is trying to contain the restless farmers (led by Lloyd Bridges) and cattle drivers who are constantly at each other's throats whilst the encroaching railroad makes it's presence felt too. It's got loads of gunfights to keep it moving and even the romance (with the delightful Ann Dvorak and Rhonda Fleming) is not too interfering to the pacy, action-driven plot. As ever, for me anyway, the singing just gets on the nerves - though the twee lyrics that rhyme in the cheesiest of fashions always come in useful for a toilet break, or to boil the kettle - but I see little else of value in these instrumental breaks that frequently suck the momentum from the story. There was always something just a little too clean cut about Randolph Scott (a bit like Alan Ladd) for these kinds of parts, but here he is actually quite decent as he does his job and fends off the two women simultaneously, but the acting plaudits go to Buchanan who does most pf the heavy lifting. It's not great, this - but I like the genre, and found it quite watchable for 90 minutes.
Cattle baron Matt Devereaux raids a copper smelter that is polluting his water, then divides his property among his sons. Son Joe takes responsibility for the raid and gets three years in prison. Matt dies from a stroke partly caused by his rebellious sons and when Joe gets out he plans revenge.
Mortimer builds a fence for the cattle brought by Ken Morley. To retaliate, Slater who wants access to the land, builds a dam cutting off Mortimer's water supply. When Ken confronts Slater, he is captured. Then lightning destroys the dam and Ken, imprisoned in a shack, is in the path of the oncoming water.
Broke and in debt, an otherwise honest cowboy and his buddy get mixed up in some shady dealings with a crooked cattle dealer.
Captain Porter's scheme is to buy livestock and then have his men show up later to kill the buyer and retrieve the money. When his men kill the next victim, he frames the Arizonian for the murder. The Arizonian escapes the law and joins up with the outlaw Vasquez. Knowing Porter's scheme, he plans to trap him by using Vasquez as the next buyer.
A drought is about to end the cattle business. The owner of a canning factory wants to buy all the remaining cattle cheap. He plans to ruin the cattlemen's plans to ship water by train and to seed the clouds for rain. Roy is sent by a packing house to investigate.
