When her elderly father has a stroke, Emmanuelle rushes to his bedside. Sick and half-paralysed in his hospital bed, he asks Emmanuelle to help him end his life.

On the Santa Cruz waterfront lives a young woman and her elderly roommate, an oddball pair who are the last vestiges of a town taken over by the tech elite. She asks the Navy not to publicize her rescue nor notify Nicholas as she wants to do so herself.
